FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Welcome to our FAQ page. Here, we provide answers to some of the most common questions about our classes, policies, and offerings. Whether you're a new student or a returning member, you'll find helpful information to enhance your experience at Montuno Dance Company. If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Do I need to bring a partner?

Our classes cater to students who sign up on their own and students who sign up with a partner. Classes operate a partner-rotating system. Every few minutes, students get to dance with a new partner to ensure all students get to dance with one another.

If you have your own partner and do not wish to rotate partners, kindly let the next person in rotation know you're staying together and to bypass you for the next available partner.

Do you offer the first class for free?

Unfortunately, due to the high demand for our group classes, we are no longer offering the first class for free. If you're unsure whether our classes are suitable for you, you can pay a drop-in fee. If you decide to continue for the entire session, this fee can be applied towards the cost of the 4-week session.

What type of shoes should I wear?

Newcomers to salsa do not need to purchase dance shoes immediately. Most people already have something suitable in their closet, such as dress shoes or form-fitting sneakers. We recommend shoes that are stable, sleek, and do not grip the floor. Stilettos are not recommended.

We usually suggest purchasing dance shoes once students join the Intermediate classes. These shoes should have suede soles, which allow intermediate and advanced dancers to execute precise footwork more effectively and reduce joint strain.

What do I wear to class?

Keep in mind that one of our goals is to make you sweat! We recommend athletic wear that allows for movement and ventilation. Ultimately, wear whatever you feel most comfortable in—whether that's dressing up, dressing down, or blending in. Most people attend our classes in casual street clothing or athletic wear.

I sweat a lot. What should I do?

Flying sweat tends not to be well received in partner dances. If you are an excessive sweater, be considerate of your dance partners and bring a hand towel to dry off and/or as many changes of shirts as needed.

What if I can make it to one of the classes?
If you know in advance that you won't be attending one of the 4 weeks of the session, we recommend purchasing drop-in classes instead.

How do I know what my level is?

It is strongly suggested that experienced students contact us for an assessment. Also, to address this, we have put together a self-assessment test that enables students to gauge their readiness for a more advanced class.
